Equity impacts
EJ communities often do not get their fair share of solar projects, electrification, and clean energy benefits and are sometimes left out of the potential workforce opportunities. These projects can also impact housing affordability and lead to displacement without proper protections for existing residents.
Recommendations
- Consider equitable hiring practices for energy-related projects and equitable distribution of electrification advancements across city buildings.
- Consider measures to maximize affordability and accessibility in EJ neighborhoods as these projects unfold.
- EJ communities should be prioritized for renovations and new construction projects along with well-resourced neighborhoods. Consider making explicit prioritization of EJ communities in actions when warranted.
- Ensure that City-owned properties in EJ communities get a fair share of solar projects and other clean energy benefits, and that customer programs that support electrification and renewable energy benefit low-income and EJ communities.
- EJ communities, who need clean energy more urgently than others, should be consulted with and prioritized.
